Filters

Filters can be used to hide irrelevant tasks based on a criteria that you specify. Swift To-Do List 8 comes with several inbuilt filters, that you can use, modify or delete. You can also create your own.

The filters are very flexible and powerful.

How to use a filter

Only one filter can be active at a time. To activate a filter, select it using the Filter toolbar dropdown button, or using the Filter menu item in the View menu. When a filter is active, the task-view is filtered.

To deactivate a filter, select "No Filter" in the Filter menu/toolbar dropdown.

Tip: Each of your filters has automatically assigned shortcut. You can use the shortcuts (Control+1 to Control+9) to activate the filters. Control+0 deactivates the filter. The shortcuts are assigned based on the order of filters in the Manage Filters window. You can reorder the filters in Manage Filters window to change their shortcuts.

How to create a new filter

To create a new filter, you have to open the Manage Filters window first. To do that, click the "Manage" menu item, and then "Filters...". Alternatively, click the Filter toolbar dropdown button, and then choose "Manage Filters...".

In the Manage Filters window, click Add to create a new filter. You can also modify, delete, or reorder existing filters.

You can choose custom name for each filter.

Advanced filter options

Since version 8.0, filters support some advanced options.

In the Add/Edit Filter window, you can go to the Advanced tab. There are 2 advanced options:

"When I apply this filter, switch view mode to" dropdown with these available choices:
(no change) - Default
Selected List
Selected List + Sub-lists
All Lists

If you set something else than (no change) into this dropdown, then, when you apply this particular filter, the view mode will get changed according to this settings. With this option, you can create a filter such as "all done tasks in all lists" or "due today in this list only", etc.

You probably want to view all tasks when applying some of the filters - but until now, you had to set the view mode separately and manually. With this option, the view mode can get changed automatically when you apply the filter.

The second advanced option is "Show only tasks with checkboxes (hide non-tasks)". When you enable this, all items from "Lists" will get hidden. The tree can contain 3 kinds of items: To-do lists, Lists, and Memos. Lists have no checkboxes and are intended for non-actionable items, such as inventories. This filter option allows you to hide all such items from the filter.
